Wheel Tread Damage Monitoring

Wheel tread damage can greatly influence the ride quality and safety of a rail vehicle. This makes timely removal of rogue wheels with surface damage vital when it comes to optimising maintenance costs, increasing wheel life and vehicle availability.

In addition to the wear reflected in the measured tread profile, wheels require maintenance as a result of other operating conditions.

MRX Technologies has developed systems to characterise various types of tread damage. The Wheel Flat Detection System (WFDS) provides roll-by measurement of impacts and dynamic loads resulting from damage to the wheel tread surface.

Wheel impact measurements are analysed to detect wheel flats and tread damage that result in abnormal loadings.
